Relinquishing control as missionary in Thailand (Webinar recording)

On 22 January 2026, long-standing missionary in Thailand George M. shared some experiences that illustrated the differences between non-vulnerable and vulnerable missionaries. For example, he emphasised how the dynamics are different when inviting others into our space, vs. being invited into the existing spaces of those we are there to serve.

Entering anotherโ€™s space is a form of giving up control. He also asked us to consider if we sometimes do the inappropriate things, just because they are familiar to us and we do them well. He asked if we are willing to do what is appropriate, even when we do it poorly. This encourages us to have the basis for appropriate action be based on dependence on Christ. He used stories from his own life to illustrate. The third point was introducing us to the conscious competent learning model, which describes an internal process starting with not being aware that we are doing the inappropriate things, through four stages of growth leading to doing what is appropriate as second nature.
