At various levels, members of the AVM are engaged in the academic study of Vulnerable Mission. A number of them are connected through an informal research network. Their aim is a self‑critical and constructive reflection of historical and contemporary Western mission methods. Often, the research methodology itself is based on employing Vulnerable Mission principles, i.e. the use of indigenous languages and local resources.

Two broad areas of academic enquiry can be identified. One is gaining a deeper understanding of the practice of Vulnerable Mission in different contexts. The other is exploring how Vulnerable Mission relates to missiological and other topics, such as:
